Sony has been ramping up its efforts to keep its lineup up to date, and the flagship Xperia Z smartphone is one of the latest recipients of a brand new software update. It's not a new Android version, but a patch has now been released to Xperia Zs worldwide.

Sony Mobile took to Twitter to announce the following:

As one can see, the Xperia Z isn't the only device that will get the update, although it certainly is the most prolific. Little is known about what exact improvements are made, but as Sony says, the display, camera, battery and performance should all see a boost. Once again, as is the norm with over-the-air rollouts, not everybody will receive it at once (hence the "phased") and some batches will get it earlier than others.

The Xperia Z currently runs Android 4.2, and the update does nothing to change that. Sony has promised it will do its best to release Android 4.3 for the handset as soon as possible.

Sony's Xperia Z handset made quite a splash (no pun intended) when it debuted in early 2013 to much fanfare about its waterproof capability. The phone comes equipped with a 5-inch 1080p display, a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage and a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. Unlike most smartphones, which instantly croak when placed in water, the Xperia Z has been designed to withstand up to 30 minutes underwater at depths of up to one meter. You won't be able to go scuba diving with it, but it sure makes for some interesting camera opportunities.

Let us know what improvements you spot in your Xperia Z from the new update in the comments section below.
