The men's boxing team made history at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, but it's a feat they would prefer not to have.

Welterweight Errol Spence was the last hope for the American men to win an Olympic medal when he entered the ring against Russian Andrey Zamkovoy in a quarterfinal match.

Following the loss of eight of his teammates throught the London Olympics, Errol became the ninth, losing 16-11.

The unsuccessful result at the London Games comes after winning only one bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, thanks to Deontay Wilder. It doesn't look well either as the US is known to establish Olympic gold medalists such as Andre Ward, Oscar de la Hoya, and Muhammad Ali.

"It's very disappointing for all of us, but we all fought hard and tried," said Spence.

Spence spoke to reporters about how the future of the men's boxing team needs to prepare ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, "I think we need more international fights early, we need a better program, we can't rush into things like we did. We need to get the coaches earlier and have a lot of the professional boxers who leave the amateur system come back in and help out with the amateur program.

He added, "They have a lot of experience and knowledge that would help us in 2016. I think Andre Ward had a lot of experience, just a lot of the past Olympians like (middleweight) Andre Dirrell."

The men might have had a difficult time but the women had a better fare in London.

Flyweight boxer Marlen Esparza won her first Olympic medal, and so far the only medal in boxing for the US, a bronze, after competing against China's Cancan Ren.

The US does have a shot for gold in boxing, with Claressa Shields advancing to the finals of the women's middle 75kg class. Shields will square off against second seed Nadezda Torlopova of Russia on Thursday.
