With every passing moment, fans are one step closer to reuniting with their favorite vampires. It's been a long hiatus and it's not even halfway through. That's a long time to be left without the Mystic Falls bloodsuckers. While they're enjoying their time off, fans are left counting down the days until their return. This year the gang will be heading off the college. It's an exciting time not only for them, but for fans as well. The show will explore new horizons. New friends, new enemies, new love, and, well, new everything. We can't wait, but in order to tie us over in the meantime, there are plenty of details from production to help give us a better idea of what's to come.

Fans finally get their first real taste of blood as the official Season 5 promo hits the airwaves. Damon and Elena get cute and cozy, Silas, or Stefan, but probably Silas since Stefan is still locked up underwater, gets close to a now human Katherine, who's in Damon's bathtub as he tells her that "human looks better on you than I would've thought." How much more vampire drama could the writers muster up? While the Salvatore brothers and the identical sisters steal the limelight as always, other notable moments from the preview include Jeremy getting into a tussle, someone's car smashing into a pole, and a stumped Damon unable to spell doppelganger. Check it out for yourself below.

In other blood fueled drama, Australian actor Rick Cosnett has been cast to play Caroline and Elena's newest foe at Whitmore College, reports TV Guide. Dr. Maxfiled is described as a brilliant and cocky professor who's hiding dark secrets is presumably aware of the girls' actual identities. Boom.

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW on Thursday, October 3.
