In a war of the pop divas, it appears that Katy Perry is coming out on top. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry's new singles were released online last weekend, which spurred an immediate flurry of downloads from Gaga and Perry fans around the world.
Although Billboard projected that the singers would be neck-in-neck, with both surpassing 500,000 sales, Gaga's stagnated while Perry's continued to rise. Entertainment Weekly reports that Katy Perry is coming out on top with close to 525,000 downloads of her new single, "Roar," while Gaga is trailing behind with 200,000 downloads of her latest single, "Applause."
Perry will break her record if her single surpasses 525,000 in one week, as is expected. The number of downloads in a week will shatter her previous record of 509,000 downloads in a week of "Firework" in December 2010. Gaga also sold 509,000 downloads of "Born This Way" after its release in 2011.
Perry's lastest single is a self-affirming anthem that tells of her newfound sense of strength and independence. Gaga's is also a loud pop album, but focuses on her lifestyle as a performer and living for "the applause."
The true contest will commence when both albums hit shelves. Perry's new album, "Prism," will debut Oct. 22, and Gaga's new record, "ARTPOP," will drop on Nov. 11.
Perry's album will debut a darker image; a teaser for the "Roar" video shows Perry, donning dark hair and dark lipstick, literally putting her old "California Gurls" image to rest. Perry got the news out about her upcoming album by displaying an ad for her new single on a gigantic golden semi-truck in early August.
Gaga's new album is promising to be as, if not more, outrageous and artsy than her previous musical creations. The music video for "Applause" features her scantily clad, and is, of course, avant-garde. Her second single, now known as "Aura" or "Burqa" is already making waves for its controversial content.
The world will see who wins the battle of the songstresses when the albums debut this fall.
