Google's Android mobile operating system continued to show its dominance in the worldwide smartphone market share while Apple Inc. dipped compared to the second quarter of 2012.
Based on figures by information technology research and advisory company Gartner, Android maintained the top position in the mobile platform market while increasing its percentage.

Android saw an increase of 14.8 percent for a 79 percent finish for the second quarter of 2013.
Apple's iOS finished the recent second quarter with 14.2 percent. The percentage for Apple, however, is down 4.6 percent from 18.8 percent during the same quarter last year.
Microsoft saw a minor gain in comparison to last year and enough to jump into third place ahead of Symbian, BlackBerry, and Bada platforms. Microsoft's Windows Phone received 2.6 percent of the worldwide smartphone market share in 2012's second quarter but increased to 3.3 percent this year.
"While Microsoft has managed to increase share and volume in the quarter, Microsoft should continue to focus on growing interest from app developers to help grow its appeal among users," said Gartner's Principal Research Analyst Anshul Gupta.
BlackBerry maintained its fourth place position as it garnered 2.7 percent, which is down from 2012's 5.2 percent.
Bada accounted for 0.4 percent of the market share. Bada's market share figure is down from 2012's 2.7 percent.
Overall, Symbian's market share took the biggest hit, dropping from 5.9 percent from the second quarter of 2012 to 0.3 percent for the same period this year.
