On Aug. 16, Giuseppe Verdi's "Don Carlo" will be broadcast worldwide on I Medici.TV.

The production by Peter Stein recently premiered at the Salzburg Festival and stars Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Harteros, Thomas Hampson, Ekaterina Semenchuck, Matti Salminen, and Eric Halfvarson. Antonio Pappano conducts the Vienna Philharmonic.

The production scored rave reviews for the cast with Rupert Christenson of the Telegraph stating, "Jonas Kaufmann, who combines absolute technical stability with the highest musical intelligence - and a nobly handsome profile - paints a vividly powerful portrait of Don Carlo's troubled psyche. We are living through the prime of Anja Harteros, a singer with the beauty of timbre, dignity of style, amplitude of voice and grandeur of presence."

However, the Telegraph didn't love everything about "Don Carlo." Christenson reviled the production as feeble and flat. "It is hard to believe that anyone with Stein's reputation should put his name to a spectacle so blank, lazy and unimaginative. No attempt has been made to create atmosphere or explore character," wrote Christenson.

Shirley Apthorp from the Financial Times also objected to the production and stated, "The Salzburg Festival's new 'Don Carlo' staging is an object lesson in sumptuous emptiness. "

"Don Carlo's" revival is the first time the festival is presenting the work since 1998. The production celebrates Verdi's bicentennial and is one of the highlights of this year's festival.

Kaufmann and Harteros recently performed a run of "Don Carlo" in Munich. They also performed Verdi's "Il Trovatore" in Oliver Py's new production. The duo next returns to Munich where they will perform "La Forza del Destino" also by Verdi.
