Fans of ABC’s fantasy drama “Once Upon a Time” are in for a whole new adventure as the show’s core cast heads to Neverland in search of Emma’s (Jennifer Morrison) son Henry (Jared Gilmore), as he heads to the dreaded Peter Pan. Co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz recently shared some details of the upcoming season with fans at Disney’s D23 Expo in California.

At the end of season two, Emma embarks on the trip aboard Hook’s (Colin O’Donoghue) ship the Jolly Roger with mom Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), dad David (Josh Dallas), Henry’s adoptive mother Regina (Lana Parrilla) and his grandfather Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle). The trip will prove difficult as everyone tries to take the leadership position, Kitsis told TVLine.

“You’ve got five people on a ship who all think they’re leaders, so we’ll have to see how they react when they face their first obstacle,” he teased. Horowitz added, “There’s certainly some friction, but there’s also a shared goal they have to achieve. The question is: Will they achieve it together, separately or at all?”

During the D23 Expo, the creative duo also revealed a clip of the upcoming third season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The clip shows Mr. Gold, aka Rumplestiltskin, getting an ominous warning about Peter Pan from one of his lost boys.

“When Rumplestiltskin lets us know he is someone to be frightened of, I’m frightened,” Kitsis told fans at the event. “Neverland is the heart of darkness, but they’re going into it to save Henry.”

According to THR, the new season will be split into two parts of 11 episodes, with the first focusing on Neverland. While there will be plenty of drama and adventure this season, there will also be time for love.

THR reported that the co-creators teased of a romantic link between Emma and Hook. For fans curious about Regina’s chances at love, Horowitz told TVLine that “someone” will join the show early on in the season, “but in a way that you don’t expect.”

The EP elaborated to TV Guide, “It’s a side of the character of Regina we’ve only touched upon in the first two seasons. We’re excited to see more of that and more importantly to explore her capacity for love.”

The upcoming season will also feature a number of guest characters, including Tinker Bell, Ariel (the Little Mermaid) and perhaps even Ursula and Eric.

“Once Upon a Time” season 3 will premiere on Sunday, September 29 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
