When Dorothy clicked together her ruby slippers, she was trying to go home to Auntie Em. Soon, CBS will have Dorothy clicking her heels together to go somewhere unexpected: the doctor's.

CBS is jumping aboard the fairytale/fantasy series bandwagon and developing a "Wizard of Oz" themed medical drama. According to Entertainment Weekly, CBS has signed a deal to develop a series called "Dorothy," which is described by the network as "a medical soap based in New York City, inspired by the characters and themes immortalized in 'The Wizard of Oz'."

The show will be penned by Emily Fox, the writer behind "Ghost Whisperer," and produced by Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly, one of the creators behind FX's "Justified" and "Elementary," in conjunction with CBS Television Studios.

CBS has tried to cross drama with fantasy before, with mixed results. Some have been successful, such as Emily Fox's "Ghost Whisperer," and some have been quickly axed, like the canceled zombie/cop drama "Babylon Fields."

In addition to the fantasy series craze, evident by shows like "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" and "Grimm," "The Wizard of Oz" has been enjoying a lot of publicity as of late. The film "Oz The Great and Powerful," starring James Franco and Mila Kunis, enjoyed box office success. CBS is clearly attempting to capitalize on the recent fantasy and "Oz" fads.

The "Wizard of Oz" does have some metaphorical aspects that could potentially translate to literal medical procedures-- the Tin Man needing a heart, and the hapless Scarecrow in need of a brain, for example. Yet, it will be quite a stretch for CBS to adapt these themes into a literal "E.R."-style medical drama.

Nonetheless, it seems like they are going to ignore the naysayers and go for it. Viewers will be the final judge to decide if "Dorothy" should stay on CBS or click her heels and go home.
