ABC primetime soap "Revenge" will be coming back for a new and improved third season of scandalous subterfuge. The hit drama suffered a ratings slump in season two due to overly complicated story lines that were tough for viewers to follow. Producers have realized that there were too many plot angles to keep up with, and are heeding viewers' discontent by streamlining story arcs.

According to the Examiner, ABC President Paul Lee said that the show will go back to its roots in its third season. The series will be overseen by a new showrunner, Sunil Nayar, who is replacing Mike Kelley. Nayar will ensure that the new show sticks to its main theme: revenge.

"I think we stumbled a little bit in the second season, but Mike (Kelley) is one of the great show runners," Lee said. "What Sunil is bringing to us is a slightly less complicated and a really interesting take. The first episode back -- I don't know how much we can reveal. We're not allowed to reveal anything -- is a fantastic episode starting with a magnificent hook. I do think you are going to see that one enjoying itself in its third season. And we certainly are."

Last season featured a number of peripheral story lines that broke away from the show's main plot, Emily Thorne's (Emily VanCamp), revenge on a rich Hamptons family who imprisoned and murdered her father.

The second season featured Emily in the midst of a love quadrangle with Jack, (Nick Wechsler) Daniel (Joshua Bowman) and Aiden (Barry Sloane). VanCamp revealed to TV Line that part of the third season's streamlining will include Emily juggling two men instead of three.

"One thing that Sunil and I talked about was really defining her relationship with these men, because it got very muddled," VanCamp said. "No one is going to love three men in the same way. We really needed to define: Who does Emily Thorne love?"

"She's really using Daniel," VanCamp continued. "It's unfortunate. There really is not the element of love between Emily and Daniel. It's part of her plan. Jack and Aiden are her two great loves, for very different reasons. Emily and Aiden understand each other on a totally different level than anyone could ever imagine. And yet the nostalgia and the childhood love and the purity and the wholesomeness of love with Jack is such an appeal to her, too."

Yet, the severing of romantic ties with one man will not make her love life much simpler. "She's battling these different emotions of two different men, and yet she's marrying another one," VanCamp said, laughingly. "It's incredibly complicated, as always."

VanCamp commented on the complicated relationship with Jack, who found out last season why Emily was really friends with him during their childhood. "I can say the relationship with Jack is going to be tense for a while, obviously," VanCamp added. "She screwed him real bad, let's be honest."

"Revenge" returns for its third drama-filled season Sunday, September 29 at 9 p.m on ABC.
