The Tottenham Hotspurs Twitter page caused confusion when the club changed its background, removing franchise star Gareth Bale from the page.
Many questioned if the design change was confirmation of the move, but the club reassured fans that it was merely a routine gesture.
"Changing our Twitter background seems to have created a bit of a frenzy. With Clint leaving the Club, it was time for an image change #THFC," the club's Twitter account wrote. "Gareth was on that background too. Did anyone notice? We change our social media backgrounds regularly and feature all players. #THFC"
Bale is in hot demand and could be headed to Real Madrid if his club takes the 100 million pound offer. Bale has already missed a number of friendlies for Tottenham and has reportedly been upset at training sessions.
The situation has mounted over the last few weeks with Madrid continually upping its offer for the Welshman. The club has continually resisted the move, and has created tension with its star and the opposing club.
A few days ago Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas attacked Madrid's boss Carlo Ancelotti for speaking about the transfer.
"Carlo is a person I appreciate a lot and we have great respect for each other, but bearing in mind this situation they have decided to make it public," said Villas-Boas, according to ESPN.com. "Normally in situations like this it is scrutinized by the Football Association with lots of care and attention. We have seen lots of people speak about a player that is not theirs and we are due some respect."
