Kristin Davis, former "Manhattan Madam" and current candidate for New York City Comptroller, has been arrested and charged on multiple counts of illegally selling prescription pills, the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office announced on Tuesday.

Davis, 38, an infamous former madam in New York who allegedly once supplied her opponent Eliot Spitzer with prostitutes, was arrested Monday by federal officers after a long-term investigation into her illegal possession and distribution of controlled substances, the International Business Times reports.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the FBI, Davis is accused of buying and eventually selling drugs to an undercover informant, or "cooperating witness" (CW), beginning in 2009. The various drugs she sold include Adderall, Xanax, Ambien, Oxycodone and Soma.

"As alleged, Kristin Davis sold prescription pills not once, but rather four different times in four months to an FBI cooperating witness," said George Venizelos, assistant director-in-charge of the New York Field Office of the FBI in a statement. "This type of criminal activity is illegal for citizens, and is especially unbecoming for a person seeking public office in the City of New York."

According to the FBI complaint, there were three instances between January 2013 and March 2013 when Davis sold approximately 200 various kinds of prescription pills (each time) to the CW, and a fourth instance in April where Davis set up a deal for another individual to sell to the CW.

Davis knew the CW as a drug dealer that she had been buying from and selling to since 2009. He was arrested in late 2012 on his own drug charges and agreed to cooperate with FBI and law enforcement officials, acting as an informant in exchange for leniency with the charges he faced.

Davis now faces four counts of distributing and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. Each count carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, according to CBS News.

Davis is scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court late on Tuesday afternoon.
