It's that time. Fall is approaching and with it come the vampires. A lot of them. But they aren't your typical vampires, they're more dangerous than that. They take human form and hide their true identities from the outside world. They also entangle our hearts and pull at the chords with gripping relationships and relentless heartbreaking romances. They toy with our emotions. They're the vampires of Mystic Falls and they're coming back for their fifth season this fall with plenty more drama that's most likely to torture fans than their vampire fangs.

As "The Vampire Diaries" gears up for its fifth season, details from production continue to give fans a better idea of what's a come.

In most recent news, executive producer Caroline Dries tells fans that episode 3 will be a flashback episode, according to TVLine. "It is a decade we haven't seen before," she says. "It's going to be very good."

In terms of love and faltering relationships, actress Claire Holt, who plays Rebekah on the show, talks her romance with Matt as the show moves forward. "In the last episode, Matt told her, 'I have to keep my life vampire free,' so she knew going into it that they would have a little fun, travel the world together and now she's ready to move on and take down more men in New Orleans," she said, talking about their interactions on "The Vampire Diaries" spin-off, "The Originals," also set to kick off this fall on The CW.

Fans will be happy to learn, however, that there will be crossover between the two vampire series. As executive producer Julie Plec says, her first concern is to "establish a show that works as its own," but "we don't want to pretend like those relationships never existed." That being said, she does want to address "fan favorite relationships," such as that between Klaus and Caroline, however, fans shouldn't expect anything too soon.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns to The CW October 3.
