'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 and 'The Originals' Get New Premiere Dates as CW Revamps Fall Lineup

The official countdown to fall television has begun. August is right around the corner, which means the days will slowly become shorter, the evenings will cool and the summer charcoal will slowly burn out. It will be time to hunker down once again. Students will return to school and households will gear up for the impending winter months. Reality will set in. So what better way to escape the overbearing reality that summer has passed with the onslaught of television's greatest shows? It's a silver lining.

Fall is the prime time for season premieres. Most upcoming series have previously announced their return dates, allowing fans to mark their calendars and watch the days prior to premieres are gradually stained with red x's that reek of Sharpie. But sometimes plans change. Sometimes unforeseeable events call for a schedule change. For diehards, these changes can be a horrid nightmare, but luckily for fans of "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals," the schedule shift comes with good news.

The two CW series will both air a week earlier than their original premiere dates had them pegged down for. On Monday, the network announced that the season 5 premiere of "The Vampire Diaries" and the series premiere of "The Originals" will make their debut on Thursday, October 3 starting at 8/7c, according to TVLine. The following week, on October 8, "The Originals" will move to its regular Tuesday slot. October 8 will also host the season 9 premiere of "Supernatural," which was originally scheduled for October 15, while the new series "Reign" will bow on Thursday, October 17, a week after its original slot.
