Manchester United has entered the battle against Real Madrid to land Tottenham Hotspur's Gareth Bale.

According to the Express UK, the team recently offered 60 million for the midfielder and has now entered into a fight with Real Madrid to land the Welsh superstar.

The Daily Mail asserts that the Premier league champions may have the inside track on the forward. Bale reportedly wants to remain close to his family, an opportunity that would be easier with Manchester United.

However, the real reason for Manchester's prominence in this race comes down to necessity. Real Madrid has the likes of Angel Di Maria, Luka Modric, Isco, Mesut Ozil, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, Asier Illarrmendi, Kaka and Sami Khedira vying for starting positions in the midfield. Many believe that the addition of Bale would give support to Ronaldo and could enable the team to get rid of Di Maria.

Meanwhile, Manchester has been actively seeking an attacking midfielder all summer. Ronaldo was a major target, but the speculation has quieted down and the excitement has since been tempered. With each passing day, the sentimental return of the prodigal son seems more and more unlikely. The team has also been intently pursuing Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Manchester has made three bids for the Barcelona property, but the attempts may ultimately result in failure. Manchester also tried to purchase Thiago Alcantara from the Catalonians, but lost that bid against Bayern Munich. Bale fills the need that Manchester has.

Bale's current squad, Tottenham Hotspur, has repeatedly stated that he will be remaining with the club this season; however, his growing profile and the interest from other clubs will likely make his stay in North London brief at best.
