The upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4, set to appear sometime in 2014 for the Wii U and 3DS, will not have a story mode or CG cutscenes, according to the creator of the game, Masahiro Sakurai. In his bi-weekly column for Weekly Famitsu (translated by Kotaku), Sakurai revealed that after his team worked so hard on the Subspace Emissary and the cutscenes found within them, only for their work to be put on to the Internet, he was discouraged from putting that effort in again for the new Super Smash Bros.

"Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the Internet," Sakurai lamented. "You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees (a cutscene). I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I've decided against having them."

Instead of focusing on a story mode, Sakurai is instead concentrating on creating videos that would benefit multiple viewings, such as the videos for new characters, much like those for Mega Man, The Animal Crossing Villager, and the Wii Fit Trainer. For each new character (hopefully those found in my wish list), Sakurai is hoping that he can create videos to show off their moves and personality. Sakurai added that the 3DS version of the game will have some sort of mode separate from regular versus play, but did not elaborate.

Sakurai also elaborated more on features previously previewed for the game, such as the separate stages for the Wii U and 3DS and character customization. Sakurai explained that the Wii U and 3DS stages will be completely different for the most part. He said the 3DS version of the game will have stages based on handheld games, while the Wii U version will have console-based stages. This is seen in the Legend of Zelda stages for both games, which is based on Spirit Tracks for the 3DS and Skyward Sword for the Wii U. Characters will be customizable, and by altering a character their performance will also be affected, though how exactly has yet to be revealed. There is also a feature being worked on that will allow customized 3DS characters to be transferred into the Wii U version of the game.

It will be interesting to see what other features could be added or subtracted from the next Super Smash Bros. game, including how the online mode will work, in the coming months. Keep it here for all the latest Super Smash Bros. 4 news.
