New York City has been the host of two major launch events this year for Samsung and Nokia's latest flagship smartphones.

In March, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S4 while July saw the reveal of the Lumia 1020. While both smartphones feature improvements compared to their predecessors, the devices differ heavily from each other.

Starting from display, the Galaxy S4 has a 5-inch screen with 1,920x1,080 pixels with 441 pixels per inch (ppi). The Lumia 1020's screen is 0.5 smaller with 4.5 inches with 1,280x768 and 332 ppi.

In order to protect the screen, the two smartphones utilize Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The Lumia 1020 and Galaxy S4 offers 2GB of RAM, however, the former is only limited to a 32GB internal storage model. The Galaxy S4, however, is available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB internal storage models. A 64GB model is available for the Lumia 1020, but it is only limited in select European markets.

The Galaxy S4 also offers a microSD card slot for an additional 64GB of storage while the Lumia device does not.

The wireless connectivity for the two smartphones are similar with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, NFC, and USB version 2.0. The Galaxy S4, in addition, is compatible with Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi hotspot.

The camera specifications are very different and a focus point for both devices.

The rear-facing camera for the Galaxy S4 has 13 megapixels with 4,128x3,096 pixels. For the Lumia 1020, the camera sports 41 megapixels with 7,152x5,368 pixels.

The front-facing camera for the Galaxy S4 has 2 megapixels, 0.8 megapixels higher than the Lumia 1020.

The video recording numbers are the same for both devices. The Lumia 1020 and Galaxy S4's rear-facing camera can record with 1080p with 30 frames per second (fps), while the front-facing camera has 720p at 30fps.

The Galaxy S4 utilizes the Android Jelly Bean mobile operating system by Google. Specifically, the Samsung device has Android version 4.2.2. The Lumia 1020 has Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 mobile platform.

The battery life for the Galaxy S4 fares better than the Lumia 1020. The Samsung smartphone has 2,600mAh battery capacity for 370 hours on standby and 17 hours of talk time when under a 3G network. The Lumia 1020 has 2,000mAh for 383 hours on standby and 13 hours and 20 minutes on talk time when under a 3G network.

The Lumia 1020 is available in more color variants than the Galaxy S4. The Lumia smartphone is available in black, white, and yellow, and a red model exclusively for U.S. carrier AT&T. The Galaxy S4 is available in black and white models.
