ABC's hottest political drama "Scandal" is gearing up for production on its third season following two Emmy nominations on Thursday. Lead actress Kerry Washington (Olivia Pope) and guest star Dan Bucatinsky (James Novak) each received an Emmy nomination for their roles in the political fixer drama. Following the nomination announcement, the actors and show creator Shonda Rhimes expressed their gratitude and excitement.

"I'm grateful to be in the company of the actresses I'm in the company of-including Alfre Woodard and Debbie Allen," Washington told The Hollywood Reporter. "I feel really proud to live in a world where a show like 'Scandal' people can see survive and succeed not just in the U.S. but overseas." She added, "Our show is inclusive not only with race but also age, sexual orientation and with gender, it's really exciting."

Fellow nominee Bucatinsky told the publication he was "flipping out" after learning of his nomination.

Showrunner Shonda Rhimes (the creative genius behind "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice") shared her excitement for the nominations, as well as the cast's first table read of the season on Twitter. "Excellent morning so far!  #kerrywashingtongotanemmynominationandsodidDan," Rhimes tweeted. She followed it up later in the day with a photo of the premiere episode's script on her Who Say account, which you can see below.

Both Washington and Bucatinsky said they planned to celebrate with the cast during the table read scheduled Thursday night. Washington spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming season, saying, "I'm really excited to read the script. It's totally cold reading, of course. So we're all dying inside with anticipation. Just, like, who will be at the table read?"

She continued, "Where do we start? We have no clue. So that's super exciting. And also for me, I'm just so excited that I get to see everybody and hug everybody and thank everybody today, because to me, this nomination is really a reflection of this cast, how we inspire each other and how we elevate each other."

While nothing is known about the upcoming season, TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich did share this about the upcoming third season, "We will learn, via flashbacks, who it was that ratted out Liv to the press. And I am pretty sure it's not anyone you'd guess. Also: Prepare to meet Cyrus' very oppressed, young, male office assistant."

Sounds intriguing! "Scandal" season 3 returns on Thursday, October 3 at 10 p.m. on ABC.
