Mexican congressman Rubén Alanís Quintero, who was recently accused of having a relationship with a teenage boy, has quit his position as a coordinator of the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) fraction in Congress, to protect his name and public image, reported official sources from the party in Baja California state.

According to El Universal, the deputy won't be working for the campaign of Jaime Díaz Ochoa, candidate to Mayor of Mexicali for the PAN, anymore.

The deputy was embroiled in controversy after a video where he can be allegedly heard maintaining a conversation with a 15-year-old male he identifies as his "boyfriend". In the audio, both men argue over a photo posted on Facebook and express mutual praise on their relationship.

He was accused on Twitter and Facebook of being a "pederast" and a "homosexual". Alanís Quintero said that the alleged conversation never happened and pointed out the discrepancies in the audio, among them quality, volume, abrupt cuts and even the meaning of what can be heard.

He strongly denied being related to minors and assured he wasn't trying to "victimize" himself. "It is obviously a strategy on the campaign's ten final days", he said, referring to the election to renew governor, mayors and councils in Baja California.

The deputy filed a lawsuit for libel and defamation, adding that he would devote himself to "address the issue and prevent the party and the coalition from being affected by fake audio recordings or losing focus on important discussions in the Legislature".

He also thanked "the opportunity to coordinate both campaigns (those of Díaz Ochoa and Francisco "Kiko" Vega de Lamadrid, candidate for governor of Baja California state), but it is time for someone else to take control because I'm focused on protecting my name and public image against the lies political enemies are saying".

This is not the first time that Alanis is involved in similar situations, newspaper El Mexicano reported. In 2011, he was caught with a minor in the bathroom of a store in the city of Mexicali and then was seen with a man in the parking lot of a supermarket. In both cases, the police intervened but no charges were pressed.
