Samsung Galaxy S3 owners everywhere have been anxiously awaiting their bump up to Android 4.2.2 for some time now, and while it looks like that upgrade won't land on handsets until next month at the earliest, Galaxy S3 owners on certain networks around the world are currently receiving a little gift of their own.
According to various reports and users around the web, an update is currently rolling out over the air (OTA) for Galaxy S3s on the wireless networks Rogers, Bell, MTS, Koodo, Fido and TELUS. The update is also available through Samsung's KIES software, and will boost the Galaxy S3's Android 4.1.2 version up to MVLDMF1.
The official changelog lists the major improvements as increased download speeds on HSPA+ networks, and a fix for instances when third-party VOIP apps interfere with emergency 911 calls. The biggest new feature, however, is Multi-Window.
Most Galaxy S3s around the world, including carrier-tied variants here in the United States (known for receiving updates notoriously slow), have had Multi-Window for some time, but this will be the first taste for those getting the update now. Multi-Window allows the user to run two apps simultaneously onscreen. Not all apps are supported, but Multi-Window does allow for the experience of watching/listening to a video on YouTube while checking emails.
The next big firmware, Android 4.2.2, is expected to release sometime in July or August, and will port over Galaxy S4 features including the new voice and gesture controls.
