It's the end of another week. Fans would expect that E. L. James and Universal Studios would have made their casting decisions for the "50 Shades of Grey" movie by now, especially since they announced the director last week, but of course, still nothing. The wheel keeps turning. Without any hard facts to keep speculation grounded, rumors have run rampant across the Internet, perpetually fueling the "50 Shades" flame. One of the movie's top contenders, who has continually snagged headlines throughout the past months, is "The Vampire Diaries'" heartthrob Ian Somerhalder. He's toyed with the idea of playing Christian Grey since the beginning, hinting that he loves the books and would be more than willing to get down and dirty on the big screen alongside the right Anastasia.

When asked about who he thinks will take on the steamy role during a recent interview with Metro, he said "it could be anyone - that's how that goes."

Somerhalder later commented on the repeated attention he's received since entering the "50 Shades" casting arena. Over and over again fans ask whether or not he'll play Christian, but he doesn't let it get to him. "One can never get bored of people asking about a huge project, every guy in Hollywood is up for this role."

This summer, Somerhalder is taking a break from the set of "The Vampire Diaries" to extend his career from television to the big screen, starring in "The Anomaly." It's is far from the "50 Shades of Grey" role that fans were hoping for, but he's moving the right direction and the shooting schedule doesn't conflict with that of "50 Shades." Now that he has more experience working on a feature film, what's to stop him from taking on the role of Christian Grey?

In "The Anomaly," Somerhalder will star alongside Alexis Knapp, Brian Cox and Luke Hemsworth in Noel Clarke's upcoming film. "The Anomaly" is a sci-fi thriller that follows a former soldier who awakens in the back of a van with a young kidnapped victim by this side. He soon realizes that he has only nine minutes and 37 seconds to get a handle on the tense situation at hand. It's unclear as to why the soldier has such an odd allotted time period to figure things out, but perhaps that's all part of hype.

By starring in "The Anomaly," Somerhalder is opening the door to a plethora of new opportunities. Let's hope the next step is toward the Grey.
