Sony's popular Xperia Z handset has been waiting for its promised Android 4.2.2 update for some time now, and while there is still no word on an official release date, it seems that July is now the most likely time frame for its roll out.

According to Australian wireless service provider Telstra's handset update page lists the Sony Xperia Z as receiving Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean July 15. The carrier states that the update was received from Sony June 14, and is currently undergoing "first round testing."

What this means for Xperia Z owners not tied to a carrier is that Android 4.2.2 should very well become available over the air before the July 15 date Telstra lists. This is because carriers have to layer in their bloatware and other network-specific adjustments after a device manufacturer has tailored Google's stock Android operating system to each specific handset or tablet. Typically, unlocked devices get Android updates before carrier-locked variants.

Those too anxious to wait, however, can already grab an unofficial leaked build of Android 4.2.2 for the Xperia Z. XDADeveloper member DooMLoRD recently posted a developer version of the Xperia Z Android 4.2.2 firmware, and interested parties can head over here for instructions on how to flash the Xperia Z up to Android 4.2.2. DooMLoRD does warn that "since this is an internal testing firmware, do not expect to see the same features on the official final release... some things could be added while others removed..."

As usual, it's best to wait for an official build to release if one doesn't have previous experience flashing.
