Now that Mirror's Edge 2 is a reality, as unlikely as it may have seemed, fans are hungry for new information on the first-person parkour simulator. The freshman outing of the franchise resounded with gamers and fared well on the review circuit, but unfortunately did not sell enough to warrant an immediate follow-up. While the free-running aspect of the gameplay was widely lauded, the combat was viewed as the weakest part of the package.

In an attempt to freshen up the formula, the sequel will leave behind the linear mission-based structure of the original in favor of an open-world setting, EA exec Frank Gibeau revealed at E3 (via Gamespot).

The Labels boss for the company explains: "We're bringing Faith back in this open-world action adventure game."

Faith, the protagonist of Mirror's Edge, stands out as one of the few female leads in the roster of modern releases. Although the trailer undoubtedly surprised many, rumors have been circulating in about the title in the weeks preceding E3. Near the end of May, a flurry of listings, found on Amazon's German and Italian sites cued the press off to the game's existence. The newly announced game also appeared on EA's help site briefly, before it was promptly removed by the company.

On the official Mirror's Edge website, Senior Producer Sarah Jansson writes, "As we embark on this new adventure, I ask that you be patient as we explore the best way to make Faith's return as memorable and impactful as the original game. We are still in early stages of development and we don't want to rush anything. We want to make sure we create an experience that lives up to high expectations and fully takes advantage of the next generation of systems."

Mirror's Edge 2 will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. No release date has been announced.
