The iPhone 5S, or 6 depending on what Apple decides to name its next device, will reportedly feature enhanced security in the form of a fingerprint scanner, suggests Topeka Capital analyst Brian White.
White explains, "Our research suggests that users will simply place their finger on the home key of the iPhone 5S and this will automatically unlock the device, nullifying the need to enter a four-character Apple ID Password." He continues, "Additionally, we believe this new feature will allow users to more quickly and easily make purchases from iTunes, the iBook Store and the App Store, while also accessing Game Center. Although White is far from an Apple spokesman, this isn't the first time rumors have mounted pointing towards fingerprint recognition in the upcoming 5S/6.
Back at an Intercop tech convention in May, PayPal Chief Information Security Officer Michael Barrett said that "Passwords, when used ubiquitously everywhere at Internet scale are starting to fail us."
He added, "It's widely rumored that a large technology provider in Cupertino, [California] will come out with a phone later this year that has a fingerprint reader on it. There is going to be a fingerprint enabled phone on the market later this year. Not just one, multiple."
Apple's biggest rival, Samsung, is also reportedly considering including fingerprint recognition through a software update for the upcoming Galaxy S4.
