The sequel to the smash hit Plants Vs. Zombies will be coming to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch July 18, developer PopCap has confirmed to IGN. Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time will be free to play, but feature a variety of upgrades and items that can be used in the game. However, all the levels and zombies available to fans will be free, with no plans to charge for addition levels.

Plants Vs. Zombies came out on several different platforms, such as the PlayStation Network, Steam, and Xbox Live Arcade, in addition to mobile platforms, so it will be interesting to see if the series becomes only a mobile phone franchise. However, Plants Vs. Zombies 2 may have to be exclusive to devices with touch screens, as seen in one of the new features discussed by PopCap:

"All-new touch-screen power-ups...enable players to 'break the fourth wall' and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defenses."

While the original Plants Vs. Zombies took place in various areas of a person's yard, Plants Vs. Zombies 2 takes place in different places in time, hence the subtitle. So far, PopCap has confirmed levels based on the wild west, pirates, and ancient Egypt as appearing in the game. Senior producer Allen Murray is sure that this greater variety of levels, in addition to all the new content, will make Plants Vs. Zombies 2 just as successful as the original:

"We're confident that players will see the love and attention we've put into this game...We've created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we're still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch."

Look out for more Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time information at E3 June 9-11.
