Android is projected to surpass Apple's tablet market share success, according to ABI Research.

"It's inevitable that Android tablets will overtake iOS-powered slates, though we see no single vendor challenging Apple's dominance anytime soon," said ABI Research Senior Practice Director Jeff Orr.

A potential reason for Android's possible successes is China. ABI Research claimed smaller tablets with the Android mobile operating system are slowly proving to be popular despite Apple's influence in the country. Another driving force for Android's popularity is the pricing of the tablets, ranging from $200 or less.

According to the latest figures from the International Data Corporation, 49.2 million tablets were shipped during the first quarter of 2013. Apple dominated the market share with 19.5 million units, enough to comfortably lead Samsung's 8.8 million units.

"Sustained demand for the iPad mini and increasingly strong commercial shipments led to a better-than expected first quarter for Apple," said IDC's Tablets Research Director Tom Mainelli.

As for the mobile operating systems during the first quarter, the International Data Corporation reported Apple and Google's mobile platforms accounting for 92.3 percent, worldwide. Android accounted for a massive 75 percent of the first quarter market share with 162.1 million shipment volumes reported while Apple garnered 17.3 percent.
