iPad vs. iPod Prices: Apple Increase Prices in Japan, Cites Exchange Rates as Reason

Apple has increased the prices of its iPad and iPod devices, but the change only affects customers in Japan.

Apple has priced the 16GB iPad 4 Wi-Fi-only model to 49,800 yen, or about $495 USD. The increase is 7,000 yen more than the previous listed price of 42,800 yen, or $425 USD, according to reports. 

The iPod Shuffle's price has increased to 4,800 yen, up from 4,200 yen. When converted to the U.S. dollar, the iPod Shuffle's price is shown to be $48. The iPod touch's 32GB price spiked from 24,800 yen to 29,000 yen.

Officials at Apple point to the strength of Japan's yen currency for the reason behind the price hike.

"We made some pricing adjustments due to changes in foreign exchange rates," said Apple spokesman Takashi Takabayashi from Japan, via Bloomberg.

Coincidentally, the price increase in Japan comes as Apple launched a cheaper iPod touch. Still under the iPod touch 5G brand, the new music player is a 16GB model priced at $229 in the United States. 

Apple has also reduced the price of its refurbished tablets. As Latinos Post reported, available only on Apple.com, the iPad mini and iPad 4 saw discounts equating between 15 and 16 percent. As per Apple's refurbished policy, the Cupertino-based company has tested and certified the iPads listed as refurbished and include a one-year warranty. The refurbished tablets, although in limited supply, are installed with a new battery and outer case shell.
