Fans were shocked, enraged or overjoyed when Elena chose Damon to be her one true love at the end of season 4 of "The Vampire Diaries." Whether her decision irked you or pleased you, it's disappointing to see the enticing love triangle come to an end. It was one of the riding undercurrents of the series, and now it's over. So fans are left to wonder, what's going to replace it? Luckily for heart-wrenched fans, new experiences at Whitmore College will bring exciting opportunities for our favorite vampires to find love.

Executive producer Julie Plec recently sat down with TV Line and reminded fans that a new place means new people, so get ready for unfamiliar characters and potential romances.

"We're definitely going to be entering an entire new world at Whitmore College, so we'll get to meet new friends and new enemies. There'll be a lot of new people entering our universe that we'll get to know well - and then also maybe some new romantic interests for some of our characters."

Season 5 will follow Elena (Nina Dobrev) as she acclimates to life as a college student, but since she's now with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), who will be finding new love in unsuspecting places?

Bonnie (Kat Graham) is a ghost trapped behind the veil, Stefan (Paul Wesley) is locked up and sitting at the bottom of the ocean, while Caroline (Candice Accola) will be wrapped up with Tyler (Michael Trevino), so who's left? Well, Rebekah (Calire Holt) will be moving to New Orleans, so that leaves Matt (Zach Roerig) high and dry, and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is still on the market, so perhaps their hearts will open to new romances.

There are plenty of possibilities. "The Vampire Diaries" is chock full of unsuspecting twists. Anything could happen. Fans will just have to wait until next season to find out.

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW this fall.
