Xbox One vs PS4 Specs and Features: Online Requirements, Components & Output Comparison

Now that the Xbox One has been unveiled, concrete comparisons to the console's biggest rival, the PlayStation 4, can begin in earnest.

While there are still some unknowns concerning the inner workings of both systems and some of their features, a number of details have been confirmed by both Sony and Microsoft. 

One of the biggest perks of the PlayStation 4 was the system's 8GB of RAM, but the Xbox One will match that number. The PlayStation 4 has 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM, while the Xbox One has DDR3. Both systems will also have eight-core processors in the CPU, but Sony will have AMD Jaguar cores, while Microsoft will make their own custom CPU components. It is unknown how much internal storage and external storage will be available for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox one will have 500GB of internal storage and external storage available as well. Furthermore, both systems will use cloud storage.

One of the big questions heading into the Xbox One reveal was whether the system would require an Internet connection or not. The system does not require an Internet connection at all times, but will reportedly require the user to log into the Internet every 24 hours. Microsoft has been cagey in its explanation of the Xbox One's "always online" requirement, so expect more details at E3 2013. The PlayStation 4 does not require an Internet connection.

Both systems will have motion controls. Specifically, the Kinect will be required for the Xbox One to function, while the PlayStation Move will not. In addition, the Kinect, along with the new Turtle Beach Xbox One headsets, will allow voice commands for Microsoft's device, something the PlayStation 4 may not have.

The Xbox One and PS4 will allow the player the chance to port their achievements and trophies over to the new systems, making sure the player does not have to start over with their progress.

Lastly, both systems will support HDMI, 4K and Optical Output, however, Microsoft has not confirmed if component or RCA outputs will be supported by the Xbox One. The PlayStation 4 will support those outputs.
