Season 4 of "The Vampire Diaries" left many looming questions to ponder. There's still plenty to chew on while eager fans await the show's return next fall. Looking forward, fans are still curious as to what's to become of Katherine, how the Mystic Falls gang will fair in college, and how Silas will continue to wreak havoc in the form of Stefan. As the summer months tick by, vampire enthusiasts search for details regarding the upcoming fifth season and speculate on how it will pan out.

Season 4 ended with Bonnie (Katherine Graham) stuck behind the veil, while Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) returned to Mystic Falls, and now executive producer Julie Plec sheds some light on the two characters fate in an interview with TVLine.

Why is Jeremy back from the dead while Bonnie remains behind the veil? "Nobody knows the truth," Plec said. "There's going to be some explaining to do and it's not necessarily going to make his return to his old life very easy."

During the season finale, Bonnie returned as ghost, although no one knew about her current state or what she had done to get there. She asked Jeremy not to tell Elena (Nina Dobrev) or Caroline (Candice Accola), but instead to tell them she was spending time with her mother, so now Jeremy's stuck between a rock and hard place. He has to explain why he returned from the dead but be careful not share all the details.

And what about the recently humanized Katherine (Dobrev)? Now she's left with practically no one in Mystic Falls to protect her, and many others seeking revenge. Plec revealed to TV Guide that it would now be Katherine "in need of protection much like the first Elena we met four years ago." Plec went on to say that Katherine would come to terms with her newfound humanity and judge whether or not she should remain human or risk death by taking the vampire venom.

And finally, although season 5 won't return for several months, a recent post on a Dobrev Facebook fan page hinted at a possible October 10 release date. Season 4 aired on October 11, so while nothing is confirmed, all the cards seem to be in the right place, even though the fan page isn't the most credible source.

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW sometime in Fall 2013. Whether or not the official premiere will be October 10 remains unclear.
