Guns shots were fired on May 17th at the Cannes Film Festival.
During an interview with Oscar winning actor Christoph Waltz and French actor Daniel Auteuil on live French TV station Canal+, a man fired two shots into the air. The show was interrupted and the audience ran out.
According to Reuters’ Arthur Laiguesse, "The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him to the ground. The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand." Authorities later stated that the man was arrested at the scene and found he was carrying a dummy grenade and a knife.
"It really appears to be a crazy guy," said a police source. After the man was taken away, the show's producers told the crowd the program would continue: "The show must go on."
Waltz won two best supporting actor Oscars for "Django Unchained" and "Inglourious Basterds" while Auteuil is best known for his work on “Cache.” He will next be seen in “Winter Rose.” The two actors are currently serving as jurors at the festival for the competition section.
The shooting was the second security incident on day three of the 12-day festival. Earlier a police source said $1.4 million worth of Chopard jewellery intended to adorn movie stars was stolen from a room at the Suite Novotel hotel overnight on Thursday. Chopard however said the value had been exaggerated and the items were not for actresses to use. The company later declined to give details.
Cannes is the world's largest festival in the world that attracts thousands of actors, directors, film executives, journalists and fans. It is presenting over 4,000 films in the market and another 100 in the official selection. The festival opened with Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” and will close with “Zulu.”
