Borussia will compete in its second ever Champions league final despite collapsing against Real Madrid in the second leg.

The German side weathered an early storm in the game's opening quarter hour but was unable to repeat the feat as the game drew to a close. The Spanish side came out with the desperation one would expect. Cristiano Ronaldo had a few golden opportunities, including an incredible cross from Angel Di Maria that he stopped with his chest and then volleyed right into Borussia Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller. Moments earlier, Gonzalo Higuain had gotten in behind the defense, but he touched the ball one too many times and was easily stopped by Weidenfeller. Minutes later, Mesut Özil found himself behind the Borussia defense with a clear breakaway and open Ronaldo on the left wing. Özil shot the ball past an onrushing Weidenfeller, but missed the net completely and kept the score tied at zero. Dortmund slowly found its legs, but never really produced any dangerous chances. As the half wound down, Madrid started creating some pressure but was unable to put together any major chances. The score remained 0-0 after 45 minutes.

The second half saw the German side looking more impressive. Robert Lewandowski, the striker with four goals in the opening leg, had a few prime chances to give his team a decisive goal but failed. In the opening half he volleyed the ball into Madrid keeper Diego Lopez while the second half saw him hit the cross bar and fire wide. Ilkay Gundogan had a prime opportunity that was heroically batted away by Lopez. In the 83rd minute Madrid managed to regain hope when Karim Benzema scored. The French striker also provided a deft pass for Sergio Ramos' goal in the 89th minute. Despite pressing, Madrid never found the third goal and wound up losing 4-3 on the aggregate; had they scored the away goal from the last match would have put them through.
