Until now, most U.S. customers anxious to get the HTC One were happy with the standard silver model, since supply shortages meant that was all that was available.
Now some AT&T and Sprint stores finally have the black model in stock, rounding out the options for traditional smartphone colors.
The HTC One has an all-aluminum unibody enclosure, making the "silver" model easier to manufacture. The black model is also aluminum, but the metal needs to be treated to add the coloring, so amid supply shortages and shipping delya, HTC focused on cranking out as many silver models as it could.
During last year's sales slump, HTC's order history with many of its component suppliers became unreliable, causing them to drop HTC from their list of "tier one customers." That made it more difficult for HTC to source the parts it needs for the advanced tech in the HTC One, delaying its release for about six weeks, and forcing it into a head-to-head competition with the Samsung Galaxy S4, which hits the U.S. market this week.
The supply shortages seem to be ending, as HTC is now selling its unlocked 32GB HTC One through its website again, after being out of stock for a week, followed by shipping delays. The 64GB developer's version is also finally shipping, and some customers have already received their orders.
The black model isn't universally available just yet, but the kinks in the supply chain should be worked out in the next few days.
The HTC One features a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch 1920x1080 pixel widescreen Super LCD 3 display, a 2300 mAh Li-Po battery, a 4-megapixel "Ultrapixel" camera with enhanced low-light sensitivity with 1080p HD video, up to 64GB of internal storage and runs Android 4.1.2.
