Exit polls issued at 8:00 p.m. local time and confirmed by mainstream media companies such as El Universal Mexico are signaling Enrique Peña Nieto as Mexico's next president.
Preliminary results show the PRI candidate and front-runner Peña Nieto with 42 percent of the total votes, 11 percent more than next-in-line Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the center-leftist Progressive Movement (PRD).
Josefina Vazquez Mota of the PAN national party- the same party President Felipe Calderon belongs to- publicly announced her defeat on Sunday evening. She would rake in 24 percent of the votes according to the polls.
Mexican citizens started casting their votes from 8 a.m. local time until the polls closed at 6 p.m.
Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) announced that 99.9 percent of the polling stations were installed and enabled by Sunday morning.
The IFE also announced that in today's elections, 40,787 votes were collected from Mexican citizens overseas. This represents an increase of 23 percent of participation compared to the elections in 2006.
