Robert Redford is in talks to star in Marvel's upcoming "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

Deadline reported that Redford is in final negotiations to play "a senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D., the superhero collective run by Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury character."

The film is the sequel to 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger" and will tell the story of Steve Rogers as he continues his affiliation with S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. He's reunited with James 'Bucky' Barnes, who is now a brainwashed Russian assassin known as the 'Winter Soldier'. The film is currently in production and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell, Anthony Mackie, and Toby Jones.

Academy Award winner Redford was last seen in 2007's "Lions for Lambs" with Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise. He will next be seen in his latest directional effort "The Company You Keep" with Shia Labeof, Brit Marling, Julie Christie, Stanley Tucci, Terrence Howard, Anna Kendrick, Susan Sarandon and Chris Cooper. Redford will also star in J.C. Chandor's second film "All is Lost."

Marvel is gearing up to release "Iron Man 3" with Robert Downey Jr. and finishing production on "Thor: The Dark World." They are also in pre-production for "The Avengers 2" and are planning adaptations of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Ant Man."

Marvel will release "The Winters Soldier" on April 4th, 2014.
