The fourth installment of Battlefield, the immensely popular first-person shooter series from EA, has been confirmed to be released on the next generation of systems.

According to Frank Gibeau, EA Labels President, the series will be coming to the new consoles next year, and has been in development for quite some time.

On an official EA blog post about recent layoffs within the company, Gibeau revealed that Battlefield 4 has been shown off behind closed doors, and not just to members of EA.

"At a GameStop company meeting earlier this week, we gave 500 store managers a sneak peek at Battlefield 4," wrote Mr. Gibeau. He also claims that EA's next generation work "is nothing short of astonishing."

Gibeau closed his statement with an assurance that the fine quality of the series will continue, despite the leap to next-gen technology.

"Console transitions are a complex and challenging experience.  I've helped navigate several and agree with an old saying we have at EA: Transition is our friend.  All the trend lines are converging to reward the creative and financial investments we have made in mobile and console technology.  We have never been more ready or more excited about what comes next."

While this is undoubtedly exciting news, in actuality Gibeau has very little information to give besides confirming the title was coming to the next generation of systems. When the game will be released, or for what systems, has yet to be confirmed, although it is pretty safe to say the game will hit both Microsoft and Sony next-gen consoles. With the game being shown to people outside the company, it shouldn't be long before more details come forth, and EA might just be waiting for more definitive declarations from both Sony and Microsoft about their next-gen consoles before lifting the curtains fully,
