Sony's got the gaming spotlight back on itself, thanks to the recent unveiling of the PlayStation 4 console, but don't expect Microsoft to sit back idly and do nothing. A new rumor suggests that Microsoft could be holding its own Xbox 720 announcement event sometime in April.

This tasty morsel stems from CVG, which writes:

"It is said that Microsoft will now showcase its console at a one-off media event in early April - though it is expected that discussion about future tech would be an inevitability if Microsoft engineers and developers attend GDC in March."

There's some more evidence for an upcoming Xbox announcement, as it has recently been revealed that Eventcore, a company that organizes media events, has registered the domain name XboxEvent.com. A NeoGaf forum thread states that Eventcore only registers domain names for upcoming events - if this is true, then the gears are indeed in motion to bring the Xbox 720 to the public.

As usual, Microsoft hasn't commented any of this, nor has the company said anything else about its next-generation Xbox. A tweet from a well-known Microsoft figurehead, Larry Hyrb, a.k.a Major Nelson, suggests that unlike Sony, Microsoft may actually reveal the console itself at its event.

"Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach," Hyrb tweeted about Sony's PlayStation Meeting 2013 event.

Previous consoles have generally been introduced at the annual E3 gaming conference, but as the tech market has grown to new levels, it seems that even video game consoles are getting their own standalone media events.
