Sony has officially confirmed the fourth installment of the PlayStation platform, with the PlayStation 4 (PS4), however the console was a no-show.

Sony introduced the new DualShock 4 controller as well as upcoming games for the PS4 during the New York City event yesterday evening.

Notably absent was the console, which left many tech fans going onto social networks to discuss Sony's decision.

The decision to not reveal the new console was asked to Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida, via Kotaku.

"We really wanted to explain what we've done with the DualShock 4, but as far as the system itself we have to keep something new for later," said Shuhei. "Otherwise you'd get bored."

While the PS4 won't make it to retailers until the 2013 holiday shopping season, Sony will definitely debut the console ahead of time. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, is set to take place from June 11 to June 13 this year, and it should be an ideal setting to showcase the console. Another reason to showcase the console later is to surpass the media attention Microsoft will get for their Xbox 720.

So far, the confirmed specs for the PS4 include the x86-64 AMG "Jaguar" CPU, 8GB internal storage, built-in hard disk drive, Bluetooth version 2.1, and IEEE 802.11 b/g/n.

"PS4 was designed from the ground up to ensure that the very best games and the most immersive experiences reach PlayStation gamers," said Sony Computer Entertainment in a statement. "PS4 accomplishes this by enabling the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a system that is tuned specifically to their needs."
