God of War Ascension Release Date: Best Buy Offers Mjolnir for Multiplayer Pre-Order Bonus Alongside 'The Last of Us' Demo

Players who pre-order God of War: Ascension from Best Buy will get to wield Mjolnir, Thor's massive warhammer in the game's new multiplayer mode.

"On top of the hammer, Best Buy pre-orders also net the Mythological Heroes multiplayer DLC pack, a series of characters available for use in multiplayer," writes Joystiq.

However, God of War: Ascension doesn't need to be pre-ordered at Best Buy to get the hammer, just bought.

"In a special limited time offer, if you purchase God of War: Ascension at Best Buy, you can bring Vikings into the realm of Kratos with an exclusive multiplayer weapon inspired by the series," writes Sony on the Playstation blog. "While supplies last, every game copy will come with a voucher for the DLC weapon "Mjölnir," or Hammer of Thor, for use in Ascension's multiplayer mode. The voucher code will also unlock the Mythological Heroes Multiplayer Pack, which includes four unique armor sets for four of ancient Greece's greatest mythological heroes: Achilles, Perseus, Orion and Odysseus."

No word on how Kratos is able to pick up the hammer. Maybe he demonstrates his worthiness in the game. Ascension is a prequel to all the other God of War games, taking place about six months after Kratos was tricked into killing his family by Ares.

In order to win back his soul from the god of war, he'll need to defeat the three Furies, who serve as the main antagonists in the game.

God of War: Ascension hits shelves on Mar. 12 in North America, followed by the European release on Mar. 13, Australia and New Zealand on Mar. 14 and the United Kingdom and Ireland on Mar. 15. It's a shame there's no Ides of March tie-in. Vikings are okay, but Romans are out?

For gamers who aren't up to date on the series, Sony is offering a ridiculously huge all-inclusive set. "Last month Sony announced a 500GB special edition console bundle with God of War: Ascension, available for $349 on March 12 alongside the launch of Ascension," writes Joystiq. "The bundle also includes every other God of War game ever (minus the mobile game) and a 30-day subscription to Sony's premium PlayStation Plus service."
