It looks like "50 Shades of Grey" fans have a new contender for the role of Christian Grey and his name is Ed Westwick. The British actor of "Gossip Girl" fame was recently the top pick for the highly coveted role in a fan poll conducted by Wetpaint.

According to the poll, which only included TV actors, Westwick beat out recurring fan favorites Matt Bomer ('White Collar') and Ian Somerhalder ('The Vampire Diaries') with 43.25 percent of the vote. Bomer and Somerhalder, who have consistently remained among fans' top choices for the role received 32.57 percent and 18.21 percent of the votes respectively.

The 25-year-old actor, who charmed fans in his role of Upper East Sider Chuck Bass, certainly could pull off Grey's polished looks, but could he snag the role from Bomer, Somerhalder or even "Man of Steel" Henry Cavill?

Cavill, who didn't fare well in the poll conducted by Wetpaint, earned 35.67 percent of the votes in a poll conducted by Latinos Post earlier this week. Fellow 'Gossip Girl' alum Chace Crawford has also been included in recent talks, although he came in last place in this week's poll with only 8 percent of the votes.

Fans will, unfortunately, have to continue speculating who will take up the cherished role until the production team finishes the film's script and decides on a director. Author E.L. James has told various reporters that she will not divulge even a wish list of actors so as not to disappoint anyone when the final casting decisions are made.

The film, which has no release date yet, has a relatively small production team consisting of screenwriter Kelly Marcel and producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti. "50 Shades" has enjoyed months of casting speculation since it was bought by Universal Pictures and Focus Films in early 2012.
