It'll soon be an industry standard, but the eight-core processor is still something to be marveled at. Samsung revealed its Exynos 5 Octa chipset at CES earlier in January, and it's pretty much a given this processor will be featured on Samsung's flagship handsets for 2013 - the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.

The picture above is the first official press release of the Exynos 5 chipset, courtesy of the SamsungExynos Twitter handle. You won't be able to dissect the eight cores with your naked eyes based off this image, but luckily Samsung provided us with plenty of details at CES regarding the processor.

The Exynos 5 Octa chipset takes advantage of two quad-cores to allocate system processes between. One, comprised of four ARM Cortex-A15 chips, will take handle the intensive workload while the other quad-core, made up for four ARM Cortex-A7 chips, will bear the grunt work. By allocating different tasks to these processors, Samsung claims that the Exynos 5 chipset uses up to 70 percent power than existing quad cores. Of course, with more potential, will come more system-hungry apps, so don't expect that number to hold. We'll have to wait and see how handsets perform with the Exynos 5 before making any judgement calls on its effect on battery life.

Samsung also claims that the Exynos 5 Octa will deliver some previously-unheard-of 3D performance. Whether or not this will actually be used in the Galaxy S4 or Galaxy Note 3 remains to be seen, but it's still exciting to know that mobile chipsets are becoming capable enough to take users to the next dimension.

A Galaxy S4 benchmark sighting shows the handset running on an Exynos 5 chipset clocked in at around 1.8GHz. The speed will most likely change, and vary depending on variant, but this is a good standard to expect from the CPU.

The Galaxy S4 is expected to be revealed in March, and ship out in April. There's no word on the rumored 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 3's release date, but it should release in time for the holiday season, much like the Galaxy Note 2 did last year.
