The Pangu development team has released an untethered jailbreak for Apple devices running on iOS 8.0 and iOS 8.1 as early as two weeks ago that had a number of iPhone 6 users scrambling on how to avail of the new solution.

Known as Pangu8, the app works with iOS 8.0 and iOS 8.1, and all others running on earlier versions of the Apple mobile operating system, notes Redmond Pie.

The report adds that the latest update to Pangu already includes Cydia, which enables users to install their favorite iOS tweaks.

The first iOS 8.0 was actually released in early October without Cydia that had experts thinking that it was merely a developer release to allow Pangu to get its apps and tweaks working for the system, cites GottaBe Mobile.

The iOS 8.0 and iOS 8.1 jailbreak are now stable for regular users to install and Cydia is now included too, GottaBe Mobile said.

But leave it to Apple to make devices and apps passé in a very short time.

Apparently, Apple has seeded the iOS 8.1.1 beta to developers on Tuesday, which when released, will patch the iOS 8.0 jailbreak. Once the jailbreak is patched, it will no longer be usable for those who shall upgrade to iOS 8.1.1, reports iDigital Times.

A Pangu team member confirmed the release in Weibo, written in Chinese, which was subsequently translated by Reddit, which titled the post "iOS 8.1.1 kills Pangu untethered jailbreak."

The post reads: "Apple has released iOS 8.1.1 beta to developers. After our tests, it has patched the jailbreak exploit. Anyone who wishes to jailbreak, please seize the chance to upgrade to iOS 8.1 and do so before Apple officially releases iOS 8.1.1."

Download and DIY Jailbreak

As always, jailbreaking is a choice, and not a requirement, so it is basically up to users to decide. And when a decision is made to jailbreak, say an iPhone 6 running on iOS 8.0 or iOS 8.1, the user accepts all the things that follow thereafter and not point fingers later and throw the blame on others.

If Apple can come up with a patch that can kill a jailbreak exploit, it is almost certain that the Pangu development team will come up with something to 'unkill' it eventually.

The DIY procedure to jailbreak an iPhone 6 is very easy but before going through the steps, Redmond Pie strongly recommends to do the following first

  • Turn off any lock screen passcode or Touch ID
  • Turn on Airplane mode
  • There must be an iTunes restored version for iOS 8.0 or iOS 8.1 on your phone
  • Back up your files (a must in every jailbreak procedure)
  • iTunes 12.0.1 must be installed on your PC and it should be running simultaneous with the jailbreak process

And finally, here's the jailbreak steps as Redmond Pie details it:

1. Download Pangu for Windows. Click here.

2. Right click on the Pangu icon and click on Run as Administrator.

3. Connect your iPhone 6 to the PC while Pangu is running.

4. Click on the 'Start Jailbreak' button in the center and then click again on the 'Already did' in the next page. Do not be alarmed if your iPhone 6 will reboot a couple of times, it is part of the process.

5. Once a prompt 'Jailbreak succeeded' appears, it's done. The Pangu and Cydia apps will appear on the home screen. If you want to install your preferred tweaks, simply run Cydia.
