Carmelo Anthony is dead serious in considering the Los Angeles Lakers when he becomes a free agent after all. In an interview with Daily News, the perennial All-Star is reportedly torn between his current team, the New York Knicks, and the Lakers as his free agency looms on the horizon.

Anthony, the reigning NBA scoring champion, hinted that the Lakers are the only team that have a chance to woo him out of New York next summer.

"What other team would they say? I don't think they would say any other team. If you look at situations, that's the only team that they probably would say," Anthony said.

With plenty of cap space next season, the Lakers are expected to attract elite free agents next summer and Anthony's name is certainly on their list.

Considering Anthony's situation, the Lakers might appear as an ideal team for him given that his wife, La La Anthony, is an actress in Hollywood and he has a pretty close relationship with Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who could pass the torch to him as 'the man' in three or four years.

Despite glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, Anthony said he envisioned himself as a Knickerbocker for the remainder of his basketball career.

"I'm in New York," he said on Thursday. "Like I said, this is not something that I want to keep going on. At the end of the day, I don't want to go anywhere, I don't plan on going anywhere. But when that time comes, I'll deal with that situation."

Anthony, who has never been a free agent before, has been talking about scenarios when his contract expires at the end of the season. However, Knicks head coach Mike Woodson believed the team's franchise player needs to focus first on what's at hand this upcoming season.

"It's different," Woodson said. "The Lakers franchise is totally different from any other franchise, them and the Celtics based on history, what they've done. Hell if I was a Laker I don't know if I would ever have left the Lakers because of what they'd done over the years.

"It has changed. Players are always looking for something better. That's just signs of the times. It's different. It's what it is, but hey everybody, Melo, if he's going to test it, he's got to test it. That's on him. But at this point he's got to worry about this season and this season only because that's what's staring him in the face," he added.
