Dwight Howard has reportedly inquired with the Los Angeles Lakers management about the team's stance in keeping Mike D'Antoni as coach during the final hours before his decision on Friday.

Howard, who averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds per game with the purple and gold last season, made a phone call to Lakers' general manager Mitch Kupchak if there's any chance they are going to fire D'Antoni.

The Lakers remained firm in the team's decision to keep D'Antoni, so Howard decided to join the Rockets after a crazy week of free agency.

"We have been informed of Dwight's decision to not return to the Lakers," tweeted Lakers GM Kupchak.

Howard officially announced his decision on Twitter.

"I've decided to become a member of the Houston Rockets. I feel its the best place for me and I am excited about joining the Rockets and I'm looking forward to a great season. I want to thank the fans in Los Angeles and wish them the best."
