The Toronto Raptors are reportedly considering to trade swingman Rudy Gay in an effort to unload his big contract, a source close to the situation disclosed on Tuesday.

Gay, who averaged 19.5 points in 33 games after he was traded by the Memphis Grizzlies to the Raptors midway into the 2012-2013 season, is now being thrown on the trading block as new Raptors GM Masai Ujiri continues to dispense bloated contracts.

The 26-year old Gay is set to pocket $37 million over the next two years, limiting the Raptors' capacity to go after top free agents.

The Detroit Pistons have already made a trade proposal to the Raptors on Tuesday, sending Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva in exchange for the explosive forward. Stuckey and Villanueva are due to earn $8.5 million each in the final year of their current deals. When these contracts expire, the Raptors will have enough room to sign max-player in a talented 2014 free-agency pool.

However, the Raptors are not expected to take the Pistons' trade offer until they exhaust all available options for Gay.

Meanwhile, the Charlotte Bobcats have shown interest in signing free-agent shooting guard J.R Smith.

The Bobcats became the latest team to pursue the reigning Sixth Man of the Year-winner, who averaged 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists last season with the New York Knicks.

The Pistons, Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks, and the Houston Rockets are also interested to sign the high-scoring shooting guard.
