Jason Kidd could be the new Brooklyn Nets head coach.

Over the past months, a string of coaching candidates have been popping up online, but the most recent name to enter the mix has created the most buzz.

After announcing his retirement just a few weeks ago, Kidd is aiming to take on another role in the hard court. The former Nets and Knicks player is looking to be the next head coach of the New York-based Nets.

According to ESPN, the 19-year veteran will be meeting up with Brooklyn Nets General Manager, Billy King, "to pitch himself as the team's next head coach."

The report notes that the meeting was initially about Kidd have a place in the Nets coaching staff. However, according to sources, the former All Star is looking at convincing King that he can make the leap into the head coach just days after his retirement.

"Jason feels he's really ready to do this," a person form Kidd's camp told ESPN.com.

So far, among Kidd's the other contenders for the spot are Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins, Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw and former Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles. Including Kidd, these people are looking at replacing the seat left by P.J. Carlesimo after being booted for the dismal performance of the team on the playoffs. The Brooklyn Nets exited the playoffs on the first round after being booted by the Chicago Bulls.

Jason Kidd is no newbie to the Nets. He has played with the team from 2001 to 2008 and has led the New Jersey franchise to two NBA Finals appearances before it moved to Brooklyn.

Adding to his credentials are 10 NBA All Star appearances, five All-NBA First Team honors, five-time NBA assists leader, five NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors and four NBA All-Defensive First Team. He also holds the second all-time league record for most assists and steals in his NBA career. He was also named co-Rookie of the Year in 1995 and earned his first NBA Championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.

"He does have experience. If he's crazy enough to want to be a head coach in this league, I wish him all the best," San Antonio Spurs head coach Greg Popovich said, as reported by ESPN. "So if that's what he wants to do, and that's who (the Nets) want to hire, I think he's got an opportunity and a possibility to be really, really good at it."
