Looking for a thoughtful birthday gift? A bright, beautiful bouquet of flowers is sure to put a smile on your friend's face. But which bouquet do you choose?

Florists have a dizzying selection of blooms, colors and special add-ons. How can you choose the perfect bouquet for your friend's birthday?

Send Birth Month Flowers

If you're not sure which type of flowers to send, you can't go wrong with choosing the flower of their birth month

  • January: Carnations

  • February: Iris

  • March: Daffodil

  • April: Daisy

  • May: Lily of the Valley

  • June: Rose

  • July: Larkspur

  • August: Gladiolus

  • September: Aster

  • October: Marigold

  • November: Chrysanthemum

  • December: Narcissus

What if you don't want to send your friend's birth month flower?

Online florists typically have a variety of beautiful birthday flowers to choose from, and they are all appropriate for the occasion.

Just avoid sending red roses - the symbol of romance - if you're casual friends. Yellow roses, which symbolize friendship, are more appropriate for a friend's birthday gift.

If you're really not sure whether a particular flower type is appropriate, ask the florist for some guidance. Popular birthday flowers include:

  • Orchids

  • Lilies

  • Gladiolus

  • Gerberas

Send Bright, Cheerful Blooms

Birthdays are joyous occasions. The flowers you send should symbolize the joy and celebration of your friend's special day.

Choose bright, cheerful blooms that stand out and uplift the heart. Popular birthday flower colors include:

  • Orange - Symbolizes happiness, joy and warmth

  • Yellow - Symbolizes friendship, respect and good health

  • Green - Symbolizes wellness, harmony and youthfulness

  • Pink - Happiness, grace and respect

  • White - Purity, honesty and perfection

Don't Forget the Vase - And Other Add-Ons

Many florists don't include a vase with their flower deliveries, but you can usually purchase one as an add-on. It may be tempting to skip the vase - the lower cost may allow you to choose a nicer bouquet. But be mindful of your friend's situation.

If you're sending flowers to someone at work, they may not have anything to display the flowers in. Even if you're sending flowers to your friend's home, they may not have a vase if they never purchase or receive flowers.

If you're not sure of your friend's vase situation, it's worth the extra cost to include one with the delivery.

On the other hand, if you know your friend has dozens of vases at home, it's fine to skip this add-on.

Also, consider the distance of the delivery. If you're sending flowers to Portugal from the U.S., for example, there's a higher risk that the vase may break or shatter during transport.

Think carefully before choosing to send a vase with your flowers.

If you want to make the gift extra-special, florists usually have a variety of add-ons to choose from, like chocolates, balloons and stuffed animals.
