“Mas Mejor” is set to launch soon. The new studio aims to take Latin-focused comedy to new heights, covering hot topics and recent events.
AV Club reported that comedians Horatio Sanz and Fred Armisen collaborated with Lorne Michaels, head of “Saturday Night Live,” to come up with a new and unique comedy studio, which follows the principle, “More Voices, More Better.” The studio aims to discover new Latino talent and reach young and multicultural viewers.
The comedy channel is an offshoot of Broadway Video productions by Michaels, working with NBCUniversalTelemundo, and already features a few videos on the internet. The funny videos targets various issues like police-related violence, racism and politics.
“Our mission is to cultivate Latino comedic talent and create and distribute premium comedy content for a diverse and progressive audience where they consume media,” Mas Mejor wrote in their mission statement.
Peter Blacker, EVP of Digital Media & Emerging Business, NBCUniversalTelemundo Enterprises, said that Hispanic comedy is an underserved area, particularly in digital. He added that not much content focusing on the specific market is available, Variety noted.
Rafael Urbina, chairman and CEO of Batanga Media, said that they see the potential of the Latino-based channel and believe that their audience will respond well.
Variety stated that Mas Mejor will feature short-form sketch comedy content in English and Spanish. These will be spread in different social channels and top Hispanic ad-focused website. Masmejor.com and the digital channels on Telemundo will host the free ad-supported content. The free content will be available on “Ya Era Hora con Erika y Eduardo,” a weekly TV sketch comedy show on Telemundo, as well as other video-on-demand outlets. Video clips from the new channel will also be distributed through contracts with Popsugar Latina and Batanga Media, a Hispanic digital media company.
Some of the people who will be part of the Latino-based project include Armisen, Sanz, Oscar Nuñez, Frank Garcia-Hejk, Carlos Alazraqui, Julio Torres, Melissa Villaseñor, Alexis Pereira, Dustin Ybarra, Isabella Gerasole, Jasbir Singh Vazquez, David Lopez, Frankie Quinones, Fabrizio, Copano, Veronica Osorio, Eddie Mujica, Sofia Gonzalez and Room 28, Splitsider revealed. Broadway Video and Telemundo also intend to start a talent search, with the winner appearing in a Mas Mejor short to air on Telemundo.
