This clip of a cat in a monkey costume may be one of the oddest things to greet you at the beginning of 2016, but many found this sight fascinating.

"The video, entitled Cat + Monkey 2016 was uploaded to YouTube on New Year's Eve, then reposted on Facebook the following day where it has been viewed millions of times and liked almost 100,000 times," MailOnline observed.

In the video, the face of a ginger-colored cat could be seen peering through a monkey costume, licking a banana. It later becomes apparent that only the feline's head is wearing the costume, which appears to be a stuffed monkey with the face and back portion of the head cut out to accommodate the cat's head.

Interestingly, the costume appeared to be of a very similar color to that of the cat. Could this have sparked the monkey costume idea in the furry animal owner's head? Or perhaps the owner thought it clever to acknowledge the Year of the Monkey with this stunt? Right now, nobody knows the real reasons behind the monkey-cat look.

"The cat later appears on a table surrounded by fruit and goes as far as to lick the banana, a fruit that isn't toxic to cats," MailOnline went on to note.

"The best bit is undoubtedly when he puts his tongue out to lick the banana," Metro pointed out.

"One of the cutest moments is when the the cat is lying down and we get a full view of its monkey attire," opined BT.com. "Then there's the sight of other felines in the video looking rather unimpressed by the whole thing."

However, not everyone who saw the footage found it amusing.

"The 14-second clip proved extremely divisive, with people seemingly unable to agree on whether it was 'hilarious' or 'cruel', with some going as far as branding it 'animal abuse'," it added. "More than 50,000 people offered their opinions on the video."

One noted that the cat did not seem to be enjoying the whole thing; others mentioned that putting the cat into the costume was a form of abuse. Learned helplessness was also mentioned.

Not much is known about the feline's owner, who is described as living with 10 cats in Japan, BT.com said.

It's not surprising that a video of this nature came from someone in Japan, as the country is known for its obsession with felines. Case in point: Hello Kitty.
