'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Poised to Surpass 'Titanic'

The force is remaining strong on this one.

The seventh installment of the famous "Star Wars" franchise film, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," is making cinematic history. According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney has reported that new "Star Wars" films will have had concluded 2015 with a whopping $652 million earnings after only 13 days in movie theatres.

This puts the Disney & J.J. Abrams blockbuster hit in the second spot in terms of domestic sales in 2015 and the fourth in the biggest domestic movies of all-time rank. The same report foresees "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to have had surpassed "Jurassic World" ($652.3 million) and "Titanic" ($658.7 million) by the end of Jan. 1, 2016 -- moving up the all-time rank by two and becoming the second-biggest domestic movie ever. To beat "Avatar" in the number one spot, it needs a $100 million more. Just the same, Entertainment Weekly reported that the movie "has made more than a billion dollars and broken just about every box office record on the books."

According to Oregon Live, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" gave 2015 movies a proper boost as it skyrocketed overall sales to $11 billion before 2015 came to a close. The same report noted that plenty of factors such as social media and better theatrical experiences "helped draw audiences away from their home entertainment centers and into the multiplex."

"It's like kicking the winning field goal at the end of the game. That's what 'Star Wars' did," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box office tracker Rentrak, said.

Zooming in on its success globally and internationally, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has slewn a number of records. During its first weekend, EW reported that the movie earned $529 million which beat "Jurassic World" (which earned $524.9 million) for the biggest global debut in history. Even more surprising is its unofficial feat in China where it earned close to $100 million yet it has not made its formal debut in the country.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" IMAX sales are also nothing short of impressive having earned $30.1 million domestically and $48 million globally during its premiere. Twelve days after it hit theatres, it grossed $106 million on global IMAX screens alone - beating the 18-day record of "Jurassic World."

EW also reported the international success of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." It is regarded as having the biggest opening weekends in various countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Ukraine, Iceland, Serbia and New Zealand.
