Year 2016 is shaping up to be the year for comic book giant DC Comics to finally begin catching up with its competitor Marvel Comics with regards to its cinematic universe.
While DC does have its official blockbuster "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" set up for early 2016, its other big movie "Suicide Squad" has been garnering lots of attention as well.
Comic Book reports that while "Suicide Squad" isn't one of DC's biggest titles, the movie promises to surprise audiences who are looking for a different kind of "superhero" film.
From what has been released so far from the film's two trailers, audiences are in for a lot of action and suspense.
For those who do not know who the Suicide Squad are, they are originally former villains who have been "recruited" by the United States government to do covert operations that have little or no chances of success. If the mission fails, the government can claim it had nothing to do with them since the team comprises super villains.
While the team is originally titled "Task Force X", the nickname "Suicide Squad" quickly takes root as the members are also implanted with explosives in their heads should they choose to disobey orders.
Screen Rant reports that the film has been stacked with a large cast of Hollywood stars that include Will Smith (Deadshot), Margo Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) and Academy Award Winner Jared Leto (Joker).
From what has been seen so far, the film will see how Amanda Waller first recruits Task Force X and that the mission they will be sent on is almost impossible.
The trailer shows that the film will slightly focus more on Harley Quinn and Deadshot as there are many flashback scenes for both characters in the trailers. This is understandable as Smith and Robbie are arguably the film's two biggest stars.
Also confirmed in these flashbacks is Batman, who will still be played by Ben Affleck, as it is most likely the hero will be a central part of Harley's story.
The movie will be loosely based on a "Suicide Squad" story called "Assault on Arkham" in which the team is sent to Arkham Asylum to retrieve the Riddler because of information that the villain has hidden.
"Suicide Squad" is directed by David Ayer and is set for release on Aug. 5, 2016.
